This is a great question! Lets go through the steps you need to do to learn to become a successful surgical technologist. While there are many pathways for this career field.
Take it right after you completed the surgical technology program. I would not wait because everything you've learned through school and clinical is still fresh in your mind. If you do not pass, you may not test more than three times during any calendar year.
You should have at least 2 years of experience in the OR. Must be a well rounded surgical technologist and feel comfortable doing all types of procedures and specialties. As a traveler, you will get thrown into anything and everything. But if you do not feel comfortable please let them know immediately.
I recommend doing your own research on different staffing agencies. There are ones that have been around longer than the others. You'll have to justify which recruiter is helpful and finds you the job you want. Please don't just use one company.
Please research the housing and cost of the living in the area you are going to. I did not do my research prior and it was a disaster. There was hardly housing available and went during the "peak season". Also, not to mention it was highly expensive. Don't pick an assignment paying the highest because more than likely the cost of living is expensive.
Housing is always a nightmare especially if you have never been there before. I have been scammed twice and never send money until you seen the place or at least drive by it. I would recommend staying at an AirBnb or hotel for a few weeks so that you can get a glimpse of the area and feel safe. And if you have to pay extra to feel safe it's worth putting your mind at ease. I usually use Furnished Finders, AirBnb, extended stay, Hello Landing and other ones. Please stay away from CRAIGSLIST!
Usually two to three weeks before your assignment ends, start contacting recruiters and finding your new assignment. If you have already narrowed your options stick to those, don't try to let a recruiter hustle you. Remember they are supposed to help you. They can suggest other options, but don't let them take control.
Please let your charge nurse know immediately. It's not safe for you, the patient and unfair to the surgeon. Things can spiral downward quickly and you don't want to have a sentinel event.
Remember you are there to help them and don't let his/her ego get to you. First off, as a traveler you should not get butt hurt about things. If you let that get to you, then you will have a difficult time throughout your assignment. Before the case ask another surgical tech what the surgeon's preference are. Always anticipate and have something in your hand. After the case, shake it off and move on!
